Book-Design-for-Digital

Page history last edited by Hugh 15 years, 2 months ago

Typesetters & book desigers & readers worry that eBooks etc are bad for design, and it seems as if many are trying to recreate the book in digital (eg Kindle/Sony eReader). But for me the most compelling eBook format has been iPod/Stanza, working with totally different constraints.

So what does it mean to truly design books for digital?

Have you looked at the Classics application? Stanza takes an unusual approach that makes design for it almost impossible (it deliberately ignores the majority of formatting and layout)? Classics (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=294773236&mt=8) tries for a more traditional book-like interface.

Having spent the last 18 months working on getting books into the ePub format, I think a new approach is needed as simple conversion simply fails.

In retrospect, the topic I wrote about is pretty similar to this: http://bookcamp.pbwiki.com/Media-Mismatch - but I agree, we need a new approach to putting books online.
